Ralph Lauren was born in the Bronx in 1939 to a family of Jewish immigrants from Belarus. In 1967, he created his own label, Ralph Lauren Corporation, choosing a name inspired by a sport that embodies a world of understated elegance and classic style: polo.
In her first collection, she debuted a line of ties that were an immediate success, despite having been created against the grain. Lauren designed them to be wide and handmade using unusual, rich, and flamboyant materials.
In 1969, he was the first to open a men's boutique inside Bloomingdale's in New York. In 1971, he created his first women's line with a collection of men's shirts, reinventing the classic masculine look for women.
The women's line also saw the birth of the polo player logo, which is now ubiquitous and a hallmark of Ralph Lauren style. The following year, Polo Ralph Lauren expanded its presence, starting to include accessories and footwear.
