Ralph Lauren was born in the Bronx in 1939 to a family of Jewish immigrants from Belarus. In 1967, he created his label, Ralph Lauren Corporation, choosing a name inspired by a sport that embodies a world of understated elegance and classic style: polo.

In his first collection, he debuted with a line of ties that enjoyed immediate success, despite being created against the grain; Lauren, in fact, designed them wide and handmade, using unusual, rich, and flamboyant materials.

In 1969, he was the first to open a men's boutique inside Bloomingdale's in New York. In 1971, he created the first women's line with a collection of shirts featuring a masculine cut, reinventing the classic masculine look for women's style.

Along with the women's line, the polo player logo was born, which is now ubiquitous and defines the Ralph Lauren style. The following year, Polo Ralph Lauren expanded its presence by also branching out into accessories and footwear.
